WhatsApp vs email marketing: which is right for your business?
Ticksit Team · 20 July 2026 · 4 min read
Both channels have their place. Here is how to decide what goes where, so you stop guessing and stop annoying your customers.
In South Africa WhatsApp is where conversations happen, and email is where information lives. The mistake is using one for the other's job.
Use WhatsApp for
- Short, time-sensitive messages people asked for: "doors open in an hour", "your order is ready".
- One-to-one questions and support, where a quick reply matters.
- Sharing an event link person to person — which is how most event links actually travel.
Use email for
- Anything someone may need to find again: tickets, invoices, confirmations, directions.
- Longer updates with images, several links or a clear call to action.
- Regular newsletters. People accept a weekly email far more readily than a weekly WhatsApp broadcast.
Respect consent on both
POPIA applies to both channels: only message people who opted in, say who you are, and make it easy to stop. A customer who feels spammed on WhatsApp blocks you — and that is much harder to undo than an email unsubscribe.
